Birthing trauma is the name Dr. Diamond gives to the universal physical and psychological impact of the human birth process, the evolutionary consequence of too large a fetal head passing through too small a maternal pelvis. It is the ultimate cause of all human negativity – fear, hatred, and evil. If we are to survive as a species, it is essential to put resources into reducing the birthing trauma of mother and baby, and thus to help both to become fully loving. That should – and Dr. Diamond hopes will – be a prime goal of the medicine of the future.
